Quiz / Test Directions

Standard

The standard with which Michigan Virtual courses need to comply.

Assessment directions for Brightspace quizzes/tests for SLS Plus courses must include the title, points, objectives, and instructions in the proper Michigan Virtual branded formatting.

Alignment

Quality Matters

3.5 C Expectations for successfully completing the course, earning course credit, and calculating grades are clearly defined for the learner and instructor.

Requirements

What exactly do course developers need to include in order to comply with this standard?

Assessment directions for Brightspace quizzes/tests for SLS Plus courses must include the following:

  • Title and Points
    • Follow Quiz Naming Conventions: 1.1 Quiz: Title
  • Objective(s)
    • Use the approved assessment Lesson Objectives identified on the Course Map
  • Instructions
    • Why is the student doing this? What is the purpose? What does the student need to do? List the types of questions used.

Sample Instructions Format:

In this quiz, you will [Insert Lesson Objective(s)]

This quiz contains X part(s):

In Part 1, you will (ex. choose an appropriate caption for each image.)

In Part 2, you will (ex. listen to a short scenario and choose the most appropriate response.)

This quiz contains (ex. listening and reading portions with multiple-choice questions.) Further instructions will be provided when you start the quiz.

Implementation

How can course developers implement this standard? What is the process for doing so?

The quiz/test should be scripted using the Quiz or Test Template located in the Google Project Folder > 3. Develop > Assignment Templates.

If the template is not in the Google Project Folder, you can add one from the template Gallery. To do this, you will:

  1. Select “New”
  2. Hover over “Document”
  3. Hover over the arrow and select “From a template”
  4. Under “SLS Course Development Documents,” select “ 3. Develop Folder: Quiz or Test Template”

Quiz/Test directions are student-facing and should be written using the same learner-centered guidelines as lesson content (
Style Guide: Content: SLS Audience). Learners should know what to expect on the assessment before beginning, as the timer will start upon opening and quiz will be automatically submitted once the time has elapsed. You do not need to include anything about timing or number of submissions in the directions as Brightspace automatically inserts this information based on the settings.

Directions should be simple and specific, only referring to what is expected of the student on that particular assessment. Further directions for how to complete each part or question can be shown once the student opens the quiz/test, so there is no need to include overly detailed question-type directions.

Quiz/Test Directions Formatting for Brightspace

Use font color MV Blue = 135e6f bold for listing the # of Points on the first line.

Any other headings in the Instructions are also set to H3 – (Heading Level 3), font = Black (#202122);

All other paragraph or list fonts should be black color (#202122).

Do not copy hard-coded font stylings from other word processors (e.g., Microsoft Word, Google Docs) or from other sources (e.g., webpages) without stripping the fonts via Paste Special (Ctrl+Shift+V) or by first pasting it into a text editor (e.g., NotePad), or by pasting it directly into the full html editor </> in Brightspace and then using the Brightspace HTML editor menu to reformat the text.

Ensure that formatting (bold, italicized words) from the script are included in final directions.

World Language WR Record/Submit Audio/Video Settings

  • New Setting: Be sure to check the box in the Brightspace quiz editor that allows students to insert images or add attachments, as this will cause the following three buttons to appear below the editor in the WR item: Add a File, Record Audio, Record Video
  • Revised language to include in overall quiz instructions displayed prior to students starting the quiz session: “Important Note: In this assessment, you will be asked some questions that require you to answer in Spanish by creating video responses. Please be sure that you have the proper equipment (active webcam and microphone) available before beginning this quiz. When you encounter a question that asks you to record a video response, select the “Insert Stuff” button, then select “Add Video Note” and follow the instructions, or simply select the “Record Video” button below the response editor.”
  • Revised language to include in the WR item prompt when the item requires recording video: “To record your video response, select the “Insert Stuff” button, then select “Add Video Note” and follow the instructions, or simply select the “Record Video” button below.”
