H5P: Interactive Video Transcripts-Draft

Standard

The standard with which Michigan Virtual courses need to comply.

All non-text content, including H5P videos, must be accompanied by a text alternative that serves an equivalent purpose, except in the specific situations outlined below.

Alignment

WCAG

Requirements

What exactly do course developers need to include in order to comply with this standard?

To comply with standards for providing alternatives to video, audio, or other non-text time-based media, including H5P, a text-based transcript must be provided for all such media. This transcript should be detailed and include all auditory and visual information relevant to the learner’s understanding of the content. The transcript should cover:

  • Narration: Include all spoken content, ensuring that the narration is fully captured.
  • Dialogue: Capture all dialogue between speakers, including speech or thought bubbles. Clearly identify who is speaking, especially if the speaker changes (e.g., names and titles labeled in the video but not provided in the audio). See an example transcript from WCAG.
  • Visual Components: Describe all relevant and important visual elements unless they are thoroughly described in the narration or dialogue (e.g., an image of a carbon atom in a chemistry lecture, a map showing the reach of the Ottoman Empire in a history lecture, illustrations with labels).
  • Character Actions: Include descriptions of significant actions taken by characters within the media.

The transcript should follow the sequence of the media, but avoid using timestamps to prevent unnecessary clutter.

Additional Guidelines:

More information can be found in Understanding SC 1.2.3: Audio Description or Media Alternative (Prerecorded) (Level A).

Interactive Elements: Reflect interactive elements within the H5P video (e.g., quizzes, clickable hotspots) at the appropriate locations in the transcript, including any feedback provided during interactions.

Write the transcript in clear, concise language and format it for readability, including proper punctuation, paragraph breaks, and formatting for emphasis or annotations, in line with MV’s transcript guidelines.

Implementation

How can course developers implement this standard? What is the process for doing so?

  1. Use either YuJa or YouTube videos
    1. Videos created in other programs, such as Canva or Camtasia, must be uploaded and stored in the appropriate files of MV’s YuJa account.
    2. YouTube videos can be linked right from YouTube
    3. YuJa videos must be downloaded and cannot be directly linked.
      1. To have closed captions within your video, you must choose to download the file with the closed caption feature.
        1. YuJa will send an email with the link to the video when it is ready.
  2. You must still copy and paste either the YouTube or YuJa video transcript into the approved template and include any elements as directed in the standards for video transcripts.
    1. Add that transcript as a link below the H5P in the LMS or as a link inside of the H5P (for instance, an interactive video inside an interactive book would allow it to be linked within the activity). Also, it may be determined by Dev guidelines for the build.
  3. Interactivity Integration: Incorporate interactive elements directly into the video using H5P’s interactive content types. Ensure that these elements are accessible and functional within the transcript interface.
    1. The following interactive features may be added. Refer to the guidelines on Style Guide: H5P Recommended Content Types
      1. Multiple-choice questions (single or multiple correct answers)
      2. Free text questions
      3. Fill-in-the-blank questions
      4. Drag and drop questions or text
      5. Interactive summaries
      6. Single-choice question sets
      7. Mark the word activities
      8. Images, tables, labels, texts, links
    2. Depending on the interactive feature you use, be sure to:
      1. Include all elements that learners would need to understand the question (for example, if images are an integral part of the activity, be sure to include a description that would allow them to complete the activity without the image provided).
      2. Check that any visuals within the video for that question have been included in the transcript unless it is accessible in another way through H5P or LMS.
      3. If answers or feedback is given, be sure to add this as well, unless it is covered by a screen reader review when played.
  4. Review and Testing: Conduct thorough reviews of interactive video transcripts to verify accuracy, synchronization, and functionality. Test transcripts with diverse user groups to ensure accessibility and usability across different platforms and devices.
