iPD’s Guide for Course Design & Development

File Naming Conventions

Standard

The standard with which Michigan Virtual courses need to comply.

Project files should follow the department file naming conventions.

Requirements

What exactly do course developers need to include in order to comply with this standard?

Files created for projects should be named using the following naming conventions in an effort to create an organized project archive and ensure files can be found if needed for maintenance or revision purposes.

Implementation

How can iPD implement this standard? What is the process for doing so?

For example: What is the process for getting captions created for a video?

General File:

Course Name, Location in Course, File Description (abbreviate as needed)

Examples:

Sp1A 3.1 Práctica 2.mp4 (Spanish 1A Lesson 3.1 Practice 2)

B3 M1 1.1 Attachment.docx (Birth to 3 Module 1 Lesson 1.1 Attachment)

SS8 U4 Activation.story (Social Studies 8 Unit 4 Activation)

As a general rule, anyone not involved in the project development should be able to tell which course a file belongs to, where it belongs in the course, and a basic description of the file

SCORM:

Update the package name using the following naming convention: Course Title – Module Title – Page Title – Date (The course title should be identical to the one that will be used in Brightspace when the course launches; The module and page titles should be identical to the Table of Contents in the course.)

Resources

What resources would help a developer implement this standard appropriately?

For example: If someone needs to learn more about how to caption videos or see real examples, where would they go to find them?
