Course Structure

Standard

The standard with which Michigan Virtual courses need to comply.

Michigan Virtual courses and lessons should be created with the CourseArc Master Template.

Requirements

What exactly do course developers need to include in order to comply with this standard?

When assigned to a course development project, your project manager will create and set up the CourseArc course for you.

When developing a new course, you should use the lesson templates:

  • Unit Intro Template
  • Lesson Template
  • Unit Wrap Up Template

Michigan Virtual’s lesson structure template is based on Merrill’s First Principles of Instruction which include:

  1. Focusing your instruction on relevant real-world problems or tasks.
  2. Activating prior knowledge.
  3. Using specific portrayals to demonstrate component skills.
  4. Applying newly acquired knowledge and skills.
  5. Integrating the new knowledge and skills into the learner’s world.

The lesson template used for Michigan Virtual includes pages in an order that adhere to these principles.

  • Activation (Activating prior knowledge, lesson “hook”)
  • Demonstration (Scaffolded content presentation)
  • Application (Practice activities)
    • Practice activities may be included on “Demonstration” content delivery pages as well as end of lesson “Let’s Practice” pages
  • Integration (Assessments- not typically built in CourseArc for SLS courses)

Implementation

How can course developers implement this standard? What is the process for doing so?

To copy the Lesson template in your course:

  1. Main course page
  2. Manage column/Action
  3. Copy
  4. Search your course title
  5. Select
  6. Copy

Copy the Lesson Template as many times as needed in your course. Additional Demonstration pages can be created once in the lesson.
