Transcripts

Standard

The standard with which Michigan Virtual courses need to comply.

All non-text content that is presented to the user has a text alternative that serves the equivalent purpose, except for the situations listed below.

Alignment

WCAG

Requirements

What exactly do course developers need to include in order to comply with this standard?

To comply with standards related to providing alternatives to video, audio, or other non-text time-based media, we need to ensure that we provide a text-based transcript for all such media. This text-based alternative should take the form of a detailed transcript that includes all of the auditory and visual information contained in the time-based media:

  • narration
  • dialogue between speakers (example transcript from WCAG)
  • an identification of who is saying what if the speaker changes
  • descriptions of relevant and important visual components unless the visual component is already thoroughly described in the narration or dialogue (e.g., an image of a carbon atom in a chemistry lecture, a map showing the reach of the Ottoman Empire in a history lecture)
  • descriptions of important actions taken by characters

This transcript should be sequenced in the same order as the time-based media, though timestamps are not necessary and should be excluded to avoid unnecessary clutter.

Transcripts must be created using one of the approved transcript templates in the Template Gallery. These documents must also be checked with Grackle Docs to ensure accessibility. Please refer to Style Guide: Google Docs/Grackle for more information.

Implementation

How can course developers implement this standard? What is the process for doing so?

Requesting Transcripts

If using a video from another source, review to ensure closed captions are present and accurate. Videos missing captions can be submitted to CaptionSync through an IPD Support Request Wrike Request:

  1. Select the “Create” button that can be found in the upper-right-hand corner of any Wrike page. It resembles a plus-icon and is a vibrant shade of green. Alternatively, you may be able to access the Request form from the following link: Wrike Request Form.
  2. Select “Request” from the dropdown menu.
  3. Select “IPD Support Request.” If it is not at the top of the page, you may need to utilize the search function or scroll down to find it.
  4. On the support request page, select “Technology Request” from the dropdown menu at the bottom of the page and enter the date. Select “Next.”
  5. On the Technology Request page, select “Closed Caption/Transcript Request” from the dropdown menu. Select “Next.”
  6. Fill out all of the requested information on the Closed Caption/Transcript Request page. Create a folder in your Google Drive project folder in ‘Develop’ for returned files and provide the link within your request. Then, submit the request.
  7. You will be informed when your transcript has been created. Add this to the relevant lesson.

CourseArc Generic or YouTube Block

Transcripts can be copied from YouTube videos by clicking the video description box, near the bottom of the video description box, and selecting, “Show Transcript.” The time-stamped transcript will appear on the right side of the video and can be copied into the approved transcript template. These documents must also be checked with Grackle Docs and exported as a PDF to ensure accessibility. Please refer to Style Guide: Google Docs/Grackle for more information.

Transcripts should be linked in CourseArc below the video as a PDF and NOT in the transcript area in the YouTube block.

Note: YouTube transcripts may be auto-generated and contain inaccuracies. Check the transcript against the video and revise as necessary to ensure accuracy before saving.

Brightspace

Transcripts must be created using one of the approved transcript templates in the Template Gallery. These documents must also be checked with Grackle Docs and exported as a PDF to ensure accessibility. Please refer to Style Guide: Google Docs/Grackle for more information. Transcripts should be uploaded as a PDF.

HTML Elements > New- BS24 Templates > Videos contains templates for how the transcript documents must be linked and styled in Brightspace.

Storyline Transcripts

Storyline transcripts have different requirements. Please see Style Guide: Storyline Transcripts for more information.

H5P Interactive Videos

H5P transcripts have very similar requirements to general transcript requirements with a few exceptions. Please see Style Guide – H5P: Interactive Video Transcripts for more information.
